Burke Giving Tuesday

Thank you for supporting WNCJF and The Paper during our 1Burke Gives fundraising campaign!

With your help we raised over $1000 to fund a summer intern for Burke County’s The Paper. Though we fell short of our overall goal of $3000 to fully fund an intern, we will continue to look for opportunities with The Paper to reach that goal by next summer.

Interns get valuable experience not only in writing interesting community stories, but also by assisting in editing, proofing, and helping staff in their beats. Past interns have gone on to become full-time journalists, writers for their school newspapers, and have majored in journalism. The Paper’s interns are from Burke county, in good standing academically (a junior or senior in high school or enrolled in college) have demonstrated interest and capability in journalism and have a superb work ethic.

“For my generation, as we are coming out of college, it can be difficult to find a job in our desired career. My intern experience with The Paper paved the path to where I am now. I started as a summer intern as a requirement to complete my degree and to graduate. From there, working with the staff and the assignments I had built the foundation for me to grow within my craft. Not only that, but become more involved in the Burke County community that I left when I went to Western Carolina University.” Saydie Bean, former intern and current full-time reporter at The Paper.

Though the 1Burke Gives campaign has finished for this year, you can always make a donation using our “Donate” button on our website and specify your donation is for the internship program.
